Who is Jacob Farkas
Jacob Farkas is a renowned visual artist from Brooklyn, best known for capturing in his works scenes full of dazzling colors, who invite us to reflect. Color, texture, and shape are often used by Jacob Farkas to evoke the feeling of urban life and architecture. With his process-oriented technique, he combines and layers various media to convey a sense of history and discovery.
In addition to urban references, he uses his travels to expose other imagery in his work. His mark-making also exhibits a primitive feel. The combination of this and his spontaneous approach to the surface gives his work a new dimension. Jacob Farkas’ work can be found in numerous private collections and corporate public collections.
Early Beginnings
Farkas started painting with oil at the age of 14. He always liked to draw. He used oil as his primary medium until a couple of years ago when he began to play around with other materials and to work with other types of paintings. Today, Jacob Farkas has a unique style. He works a lot with textures to later intervene the works with different materials such bronze, copper, precious stones, which in some way have been sealing his work.
Jacob Farkas’ Creative Process
The first thing Jacob Farkas does is select the palette and that is always inspired by nature, there is always something from nature that is not wrong, that somehow gives him the inspiration and the data of what he has to choose. Later, he lets himself be carried away a bit by the fluidity of the materials, he tries things out, applies some before, others after, and the work itself is what leads him to give it a certain finish.
The truth is that Jacob Farkas never starts a work knowing how it will end. It is a process where inspiration and materials flow and finally point the way.
Materials Used By Jacob Farkas
Farkas uses the most accessible materials. He does not like to work with materials that are too expensive and are hard to work with. He mainly works with acrylics and oils, sometimes with watercolors. He likes to let the medium do its work and he does not force it to do something it cannot do. He also uses different types of paper as well as various metals. When working with paper, he likes to use watercolor paper, but sometimes he also uses other types of paper.
When working with metal, he does not like to paint it with acrylic. He likes to use different mediums that he has discovered over time such as copper, bronze, precious stones, and glue, to seal the work. This adds a new layer and dimension to his work. Jacob Farkas’ work looks as if it has been carved in stone. This is the result of using a lot of glue. By using this medium, he can create a three-dimensional effect.
Farkas’ Brushes and Tools
He works with a wide variety of brushes, especially round and flat brushes, as well as liner brushes. Sometimes, if he wants to work more with a palette knife and mix the paint, he will use a palette knife, but rarely.
Mixed-Media Techniques
- Pigments and Gold Leaf – Gold leaf can be applied manually or with an adhesive. The latter method allows for the gold to be removed and repositioned. Farkas applies the leaf to the surface with adhesive.
- Colored Glazing – This method is used to create transparent layers of color. Farkas likes to use this method as it is easy to work with as well as effective.
- Incising – This technique is used to carve into the surface of the paint. Farkas uses a razor blade or a scalpel to incise the surface.
- Palette knife – When painting with oils and acrylics, Farkas often uses the palette knife to mix the paint by smearing it over the surface of the painting.
