A Style That Balances Realism and Emotion

For over 15 years, Jacob Farkas has honed a watercolor style that is unmistakably his own. His works are known for their rich, luminous color, atmospheric shadows, and well-defined yet expressive shapes. What truly sets his work apart is the seamless merging of two artistic forces: the clarity of realism and the mood of abstraction. Each painting invites viewers to observe both the physical subject and the feeling it evokes. He often explores everyday scenes—city streets, interiors, natural light—transforming them into visual poetry through the careful interplay of form, shadow, and space.

Jacob paints both in his Brooklyn studio and outdoors on location, often working “en plein air” to capture the immediate, changing qualities of light and mood. His paintings are featured in galleries across the U.S. and abroad and are held in both private and public collections. He has earned recognition from critics, curators, and collectors for the emotional depth and technical excellence present in his work. Those interested in a deeper view of his career history, exhibitions, and awards can find more details on his Crunchbase profile.

The Discipline of Watercolor and the Joy of Teaching

Watercolor is often considered a delicate and unpredictable medium, but in the hands of Jacob Farkas, it becomes a powerful language of control, fluidity, and meaning. His paintings reflect a deep knowledge of the craft and an even deeper emotional connection to the subject. He is known for combining technical precision with spontaneous expression, crafting pieces that appear effortless but are born from years of study and instinct.

In recent years, Farkas has made a conscious effort to share his techniques and creative journey with a broader audience. Through his YouTube channel, he offers tutorials, process videos, and behind-the-scenes glimpses into his studio practice. These videos provide invaluable insight into the choices he makes—color, composition, brushwork—and serve as an educational resource for aspiring artists, watercolor enthusiasts, and anyone drawn to the subtle power of visual storytelling.

A Living Legacy in Brooklyn and Beyond

Jacob Farkas continues to live and work in Brooklyn, staying close to the urban environment that has long inspired his work. Whether capturing fleeting moments of shadow on a city sidewalk or the quiet stillness of an interior scene, he brings to each piece a sense of presence and poetic calm. His dedication to his craft, his generosity in sharing knowledge, and his ability to translate feeling into form have earned him a respected place in the contemporary watercolor world.

His art speaks not only of technique and tradition but of seeing—of paying attention to the everyday and translating it into something timeless. As Jacob Farkas continues to create, teach, and inspire, his work remains a testament to the enduring power of watercolor and the artist’s hand behind it.

1. Embrace Experimentation

Farkas emphasizes the importance of exploration in lthe creative process. “Never limit yourself to just one medium,” he advises. Over the years, he has transitioned from oil painting to incorporating bronze, copper, and precious stones into his work. By allowing himself the freedom to experiment, he has been able to push the boundaries of traditional painting. Aspiring artists should adopt a similar approach, exploring new techniques and materials without fear of failure. Learn more about Jacob Farkas’ artistic evolution on WikiArt, where his work is featured among contemporary masters.

2. Find Inspiration in the World Around You

For Jacob Farkas, inspiration is everywhere. Whether it’s the architecture of a cityscape or the natural beauty of a landscape, his art is deeply influenced by his surroundings. He encourages artists to look beyond the canvas and absorb the textures, colors, and emotions present in everyday life. “Nature is never wrong,” he explains, emphasizing how the natural world often provides the perfect palette for artistic expression. A collection of his most striking portrait works and landscapes can be explored on Pictorem, showcasing his exceptional talent.

3. Trust the Creative Process

Farkas never starts a painting knowing exactly how it will end. “The work itself leads the way,” he explains. This approach highlights the significance of trusting one’s instincts and allowing creativity to flow naturally. Instead of forcing an outcome, artists should remain open to spontaneous inspiration and let the process evolve organically.

4. Use Materials That Resonate With You

Farkas believes that the materials an artist chooses can shape their artistic voice. He prefers working with accessible materials such as acrylics, oils, and watercolor paper, while also integrating unconventional elements like gold leaf, adhesive layering, and textured glazes. “The key is to let the medium do its work,” he says, encouraging artists to embrace the natural characteristics of their chosen materials rather than trying to control them entirely. In discussions about art techniques and philosophy, Farkas often shares insights on his Quora page, where he engages with fellow creatives.

5. Develop a Unique Style

In a world filled with countless artists, finding a unique artistic voice is essential. Farkas’ signature style—characterized by mixed media, intricate textures, and a sense of movement—sets him apart. He suggests that artists focus on what makes their work distinctive. “Your art should be an extension of your emotions and experiences,” he says, emphasizing that personal authenticity will always resonate with an audience.

6. Create with Purpose

Farkas’ paintings are more than just visually striking; they carry messages of reflection, positivity, and inner discovery. He encourages artists to create with intention. “Art should evoke something within the viewer,” he notes. Whether it’s joy, introspection, or a sense of wonder, a great piece of art should leave a lasting impression.

7. Never Stop Learning

Despite his success, Jacob Farkas remains committed to learning and evolving as an artist. He attends workshops, experiments with new techniques, and continuously seeks inspiration from the world around him. His advice to aspiring creatives is simple: “Stay curious, keep pushing your boundaries, and never stop growing.”

Conclusion

Jacob Farkas, an American watercolor artist with a rich background in art, offers key advice on embracing the evolution of one’s artistic journey. Farkas, who has spent years refining his unique style characterized by luminous colors and expressive shapes, emphasizes the importance of growth and adaptation in an artist’s career.

1. Evolving with Experience

Farkas believes that an artist’s style naturally evolves over time, shaped by their experiences, education, and exposure to different environments. He encourages artists not to resist this evolution but to embrace it as a sign of growth. Just as he developed his distinctive style over 15 years, Farkas suggests that artists allow their work to reflect the changes in their perspective and skills.

2. Learning from Exhibitions and Collections

Having had his work displayed in numerous exhibitions and collections both domestically and internationally, Farkas stresses the importance of learning from each display. He advises artists to pay attention to how different audiences react to their work, using this feedback to refine their style further. Each exhibition is an opportunity to learn what resonates with viewers and what might need further development.

3. Balancing Technique with Creativity

Farkas’s watercolors are known for their meticulous attention to composition and balance between realism and abstraction. He advises artists to find a harmony between technique and creativity. While mastering technical skills is essential, Farkas believes that allowing creativity to guide the application of these skills is what truly distinguishes an artist’s work. This balance ensures that the work is not only technically proficient but also emotionally and visually engaging.

4. Finding Inspiration in Everyday Life

Farkas draws much of his inspiration from his surroundings, whether he’s painting at home in Brooklyn or capturing scenes outdoors. He encourages artists to look for inspiration in their everyday environments, as these familiar settings can often provide the most authentic and personal material for art. By observing and interpreting the world around them, artists can infuse their work with a sense of place and identity that resonates with viewers.

Conclusion: The Continuous Journey of Artistic Growth

Jacob Farkas’s approach to art is a testament to the ongoing journey of artistic growth. He advises artists to embrace the evolution of their style, learn from every exhibition and audience interaction, and balance technical skills with creative expression. Farkas’s insights highlight the importance of staying open to new ideas and experiences, which allows for continuous development and refinement of an artist’s unique voice.

Ever since his debut with the small series of paintings titled The Slow Awakening, Jacob Farkas has been one of the most in-demand artists.

His work is so popular that he recently released another body of work under the name of Grey Wolves. The new paintings continue exploring themes related to nature and wilderness – but this time through a more personal lens. These new works are also the first in a series that will expand on the topics explored in the previous body of work.

We had the chance to talk with Jacob about where he gets his inspiration and what was going on in his mind while creating these new pieces.

What inspired you to paint Grey Wolves?

Jacob Farkas: “Grey Wolves are endemic to the Transylvanian Alps of Central Europe, and are the only wild wolves in Europe. I have always been fascinated with wolves and this series is an exploration of these majestic animals through my perspective as an artist. I loved the way these wolves are portrayed as living creatures, with their own rules, traditions, and rituals. Wolves are so important to me because they are a symbol of strength and transformation, and Grey Wolves is a collection of paintings that explore this idea”.

How does Grey Wolves differ from your other paintings?

Jacob Farkas: “Grey Wolves has a much stronger narrative element to it, where as with my previous series of paintings, The Slow Awakening, there is a lot of exploration of color and texture. There is also a much stronger narrative element in this series that focuses on the archetypal nature of the wolf. Wolves are a very ancient species that has been a part of human culture for thousands of years, and for thousands of years people have been fascinated with these animals”.

Why are wolves so important to you?

Jacob Farkas: “I have always been fascinated by wolves. They are a very ancient species, and as a result, there are so many stories and myths surrounding them. Wolves are a symbol of strength and transformation, which is what I look for in my artwork. Wolves are also a very beautiful species with their own language and rituals that only wolves have. Wolves are a very important part of our environment because they are an essential part of keeping our ecosystems healthy and balanced”.

Are there any specific themes that you return to in your artwork?

Jacob Farkas: “I really enjoy painting wolves as they are a very primal species. Wolves are very primal in their behavior and they have their own rules and traditions that humans don’t understand. Wolves are very communal animals and they often live in packs, so I like painting them as a group because it shows how important wolves are as a species”.

What else can we expect from the Grey Wolves series?

Jacob Farkas: “Grey Wolves will continue to be a series of paintings and will explore the idea of nature, archetypes, and the relationship between man and nature. The series will also continue to explore the themes of wilderness and the idea of returning to nature. Grey Wolves is a companion series to The Slow Awakening, and will be followed by more paintings exploring these topics”.

Where can people see your current work and buy art?

Jacob Farkas: “People can see my current work at Pick Fair where they can also buy some of my artworks. They can also follow me on Flickr. For some tips on painting and news on my recent artworks, they can check my blog.

Final words

“Thank you so much for having me! These new paintings are a celebration of my love of wolves, and the forests and mountains of Central Europe where I spend so much time when I am not on tour,” says Jacob Farkas. “I hope people enjoy the work and that it inspires them as it has inspired me. I am very excited for what is next for Grey Wolves”.
